How much would it be worth to know the secret to having a winning strategy?
A strategy for growing your business, increasing profits and building a successful firm?
Imagine if you could remove the guess work of whether your strategy will be a success or not! Or if you knew you had chosen the right person for a particular task! What about knowing how to put your team together for maximum effect?
Impossible? Read on to find out how to have confidence that you have put the right team together and deployed the right staff to drive your strategy forward!
In our article Eliminating your competition with a bulletproof business strategy we looked at what strategy means for most businesses and how you can quickly
find a way that suits your business to compete in any market. Now we move to looking at how to develop your team for success, as without a dedicated team, committed to the plan you are practically destined to fail or at best achieve partial success.
If your strategic plan is to succeed then you must look at how you can identify the keypeople in your team to first develop the strategy and then the people who can carry the plan through from inauguration to actualization, at most times these are two very different personality types.
Unfortunately too many business owners fail because of at least one of the following reasons:
1) Employing the wrong people or poor managers
2) Not developing the management team to lead the team
3) Leaving decisions to the wrong members of the management team
You probably already have a management team, but do you really know their strengths? For instance can you clearly define their approach to management, behavioral traits, thinking style, are they more strategic or tactical?
Why should you know this about your team members? Simple, if you truly want to be successful then you need to know when and who to use at each stage of developing and rolling out your strategy to ensure its success.
Whilst certain team members will be great at developing the strategy, they can be totally over shadowed by others in actually seeing the tasks through, by getting this right you will find it much easier to cultivate the right attitude in your team to develop, embrace and excel your strategy to success.
So how do you know you’ve got it right? Before commencing the development of your strategy, it’s wise to first access your management team to help you capitalize on the opportunity of seeing for yourself how key individuals are perceived by others, identify development needs and action plans to address them and spot particular talents.
If you can assess your team and identify innovative talent then you truly have unique edge.
Assessing your team can be done in many ways. However, two proven strategies are using a 360 degree assessment and a “Total Person” assessment:
360 Degree Assessments. A process used to help managers become more effective. Managers receive feedback from a full circle of people with whom they interact. This assessment explains how to improve training and management techniques, areas that should be covered are:
Communication Abilities
Leadership Skills
Adaptability
Relationships
Task Management
Production
Development of Others
Personal Development
“Total Personal” Assessment. Measuring key performance indicators that are used to identify job related ability, thinking and reasoning styles and suitability. These assessments can give the blueprint to develop the most dynamic team, based upon individual strengths, with which you can develop a bulletproof strategy and then deploy for maximum effect!
With these two assessments done on the entire management team you can create an executive view of your organisation’s management capabilities, including:
- Verification of alignment between executives and management of strategic goals for human capital development.
- Pinpointing the collective strengths and weaknesses of the organisation’s management capabilities.
- Prioritizing targets and responsibilities, group and individual.
- Leverage individual talents to maximize effectiveness of the whole team.
When you understand what makes your team “tick” you literally have all the answers to how to ensure your strategy is successful and motivate your team to maximum effect!
If you really want to succeed with your strategy then you need to seriously consider who you are
entrusting your future too. No matter how solid your plan looks, in the wrong hands you could be doomed to failure. A bad plan implemented by a great aligned team will be far more successful than a great plan implemented by a poor and unaligned team!
Skeptical as to how assessments can help? It’s pretty logical when you think about it, people have different abilities and with the right assessments you can evaluate your team and this information, whilst once exclusive to the corporate world is now readily available to all companies.
Get the leading edge, why not see for yourself just how assessments can have a positive impact on the success of your strategy. I agree wholeheartedly with the article. Hiring the right person, building a team that understand and stand behind the company policy, and communicate effectively with a listening ear. All these are what make a company strong. Employee are company best asset if we provide some good training in a supportive atmosphere. I mean customer is important, but who is going to deliver your service or product- employee. =D.
Hey Vivian,
Thanks for the great comments and points that you raise
